About the Speaker

Bhante Punnaji is a Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka, of the Theravada tradition. He was ordained at the Bhikkhu Training Centre, Maharagama, in his thirties.

This humble and unassuming Buddhist monk, unquestionably an intellectual giant of modern times and perhaps one of the foremost among today’s world authorities on Buddhism, who a few years ago served as Professor of Buddhism at Taiwan’s Fo Kwan Buddhist University and as the director of Sri Lanka’s former Mihindu Sarasaviya (university) Movement still remains unnoticed and unsung for the most part in his own native Sri Lanka.

While most Buddhist Scholars excel in restricted fields of their chosen fields of study accomplished for examination purposes, Punnaji Maha Thera’s own insight-filled scholarship shines brighter simply because it’s the result of intensive all embracing personal study and investigation cum practice of over half a century as an ordained Buddhist monk. A voracious reader from his young days in the nineteen-forties spent at the Dharmaraja College hostel, nestled in the hills of Kandy providing a panoramic view of the Dala Da Maligawa, the fabled Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, where he completed his secondary education Bhante Punnaji, preacher par excellence, continues to draw from an inexhaustible resource of Science, philosophy, world history and psychology, the very topics that caught his attention as a fashionable youth.

He obtained his training in meditation at the Island Hermitage, Dodanduwa. He studied modern science and science and Western medicine in Sri Lanka and obtained two doctorates while in the United States, one in Western psychology, and another in Western philosophy and comparative religion.

Bhante Dr Madawela Punnaji Maha Thero will be back at Buddhist Maha Vihara from a very successful and encouraging 6 month Dhamma teaching mission to Sri Lanka, USA and Canada. Come learn from a great teacher who had spent almost 50 Years Enriching Lives researching and disseminating the Buddha Dhamma.

On the 2 Jan 2011 10am, we will be having the ‘gotong-royong’ for the BISDS staff room, library, resource room and the class cabinet at the corridor of the staff room.

All the teachers and staffs are required to come and help out. Especially for the library head for year 2010 and 2011, resource head for year 2010 and 2011, head of class teacher for year 2010 and 2011 and maintenance department. Treat this opportunity to clean up and beautify the BISDS staff room, library and resource room. So we all will get a better place to gather every Sunday. Other than that, treat this opportunity as handover for year 2011.

I hope to see you all on 2 Jan 2011 10am.
